Petersen Welding Skills Workbook
A 60-page training and evaluation workbook that transforms technical spreadsheet content into a clear, repeatable publication.
Petersen Inc. needed a practical way to train employees, evaluate welding skills, document certifications, and track advancement. Supervisors previously used a spreadsheet on a tablet to check off each employee’s progress, but the system was cumbersome and difficult to use while evaluating multiple people. I transformed that spreadsheet into a structured 60-page workbook designed for everyday use in the shop.
MY ROLE
Sole designer responsible for information architecture, page layout, visual hierarchy, table construction, illustration placement, and production-ready artwork.

TOOLS / PRODUCTION
Adobe InDesign, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, and spreadsheet-supplied source content. The workbook was printed on durable synthetic paper and spiral-bound for repeated use in a working environment.

Design Approach / Production Considerations
The primary challenge was converting a large spreadsheet into a system that supervisors could use efficiently while working with multiple employees. I organized the information into repeatable sections with clear tables, skill requirements, evaluation criteria, and sign-off areas. Synthetic paper and spiral binding made the workbook more durable, allowed it to lie flat, and gave supervisors a practical alternative to navigating the original spreadsheet on a tablet.
