Research and information design
Typography Timeline
A large-scale historical timeline translating typographic research into an environmental graphic.
This academic project began as a relatively small timeline assignment, but I saw an opportunity to turn it into a large-scale visual history of written communication and typography. I researched the development of writing systems, printing methods, influential type designers, major typefaces, and digital typography, then organized the material into an environmental timeline measuring approximately 380″ × 40″.
MY ROLE
Researcher and sole designer responsible for content organization, chronology, typography, layout, visual hierarchy, and environmental-scale planning.
DELIVERABLES
Historical research • Chronological information system • Large-format timeline Design • Type samples • Environmental installation concept
CLIENT

Design Approach or Production Considerations
The original assignment called for a much smaller presentation, but I expanded the concept into an immersive wall-scaled timeline. I studied other timeline designs for inspiration, researched and organized hundreds of years of historical developments, and built the layout on a structured grid with five levels of hierarchy. Scale, spacing, typography, images, and chronological organization were used to help viewers follow the history from a distance while still discovering detailed information up close.
